4th Annual ISF Alumni Reception Held

The 4th annual ISF Alumni Reception was held on Thursday, January 5th from 4:15-6:00pm in the
Sports Cafeteria. We were delighted to have over 50 alumni back on the ISF campus and many
teachers were in attendance. This was our biggest alumni reception to date. This year´s graduation
ceremony will mark the 300th graduate from ISF and as the number of our alumni grows, we have
decided that we would like to create an official ISF Alumni Association. We announced this at the
gathering and we have asked former students to join us in this effort. We hope to keep alumni informed about the school and also allow them to stay in touch with each other. If you know of any former students that might be interested please have them email Ms. Jackson at mjackson[at]isfsabis.
net.
Mr. Slesser would like to thank everyone who organized and supported this event – particular thanks should go to Ms. Jackson. The reception was a huge success and we look forward to hosting this event again next year!
ISF Senior Students Successfully Host Masquerade Ball
After months of hard work, the ISF Senior students finally put their plans
for the Masquerade Ball in motion. A multitude of things needed to be
done in order to prepare for the dance including: selling tickets,
planning for food and setting up for the actual dance. After all of the
hard work was done we
were all glad to see that the
dance was a huge success
with about one hundred
students who showed up
and a hand-full of dedicated
faculty staff who volunteered
to chaperone. We were glad
to see so many students
there thanks to the parents
for your contributions to
make the night as
memorable as it was.

ISF Art Students Exposed to Creativity First-Hand
Seven ISF Senior Art students from Higher
and Standard Level joined Mr. Richard and
Ms. Fraki in this year’s IB Art Trip to Berlin
the last week of November. Altogether over ten museums
were visited during the long weekend. Our
students developed workbooks and ideas
throughout the visits. This trip not only fulfills
the requirement for museum visits that is a
part of the IB Art course but it is a major
inspiration for our students´ final work.
The trip was centered in Potsdamer Platz where there are many museums. The group also explored the city, including the museum island and several
local galleries
This past weekend, a group of 30 Grade 8 and 9 students and three supervisors
ventured to Paris, France. We left Frankfurt on Saturday morning and arrived in Paris early
afternoon. Our bus driver, Jean Michel, picked us up at the Gare de l’Est and took us to the
Montmartre neighbourhood, where we stopped for some traditional French food- crêpes!
We proceeded to the Sacré Coeur Basilica and did a bit of souvenir shopping. We
continued to l’Ile de la Cité where we visited Notre-Dame Cathedral and did a tour of the
Latin Quarter by bus before returning to the hotel in Chelles.
On Sunday, we got up bright and early and headed to the Château de Versailles where we
witnessed grand opulence. We had a picnic in the gardens before heading to Paris for a
stroll along the Champs Elysées, the most well-known boulevard in the world. The
Christmas market had started so we got to experience some Christmas treats, French-style.
We then continued to the Seine where we took a tour on the Bateau-Mouche, which was a
highlight for many students. We took a drive down the Champs-Elysées to see what
Parisian rush hour traffic is like and then returned to the hotel.
We started the day on Monday at the Louvre museum. Students had the chance to see such works as Victoire de Samothrace, Venus de Milo and the
famous Joconde (Mona Lisa). We had a delicious lunch at the museum before heading to the sewers of Paris. After that, we visited the Eiffel Tower
where some students took the elevator to the second floor and others walked the 700 steps to it. Some students overcame their fear of heights in order
to get the overhead view of Paris. Everyone walked back down to the base of the tower. We walked to the Trocadéro to get a few photos under the
sparkling lights of the tower before heading back to the hotel.
Our last morning in Paris was spent at a private school where students were able to practice their French skills and meet some French students. We
toured the school and were given some snacks before heading back to the Gare de l’Est for our return to Frankfurt.
Everyone had a very enjoyable time. We saw many of the major tourist sites and learned a lot about the city. Mlle. Degras, Mlle. Chute and Mr.
Kosmicki would like to thank the students for such a wonderful few days. They were all very enthusiastic and represented the school very well.
Sinterklaas Finds Time in Busy Schedule for ISF Children
The Dutch celebrate Sinterklaas (the name is a contraction of Sint Nikolaas) on Dec. 5
and 6. The holiday, consisting of St. Nicholas's Eve and St. Nicholas's Day, honors the
life of St. Nicholas. Though St. Nicholas is always shown wearing his bishop's attire, the
Dutch tend to see him as a kindly old man, rather than as a Catholic saint. The result is
that Sinterklaas is celebrated by Dutch people of all ages and beliefs, without any real
religious connotations. His feast day is observed by exchanging gifts and special
goodies. It is also customary to make good-natured fun of your loved ones. In the
weeks before his feast day, Sinterklaas visits schools and hospitals to spread some
good spirit!
Sinterklaas made his annual visit to ISF last Monday 5th Dec. All students in KG through Grade 3, and well behaved staff and administration, received a small bag of typical Dutch goodies; called ‘Pepernoten’, ‘Kruidnoten’ and ‘Schuimpjes’
9th Annual International Day

On Saturday 5 November ISF held its 9th annual International Day. Festivities began with the traditional flag-bearing ceremony with students from Grades 5 and above carrying flags from all 51 nations represented at ISF. This year the Focus Countries were led in by a “Scottish” bagpipe player, followed by some very varied and impressive Focus Country performances. After this students eagerly travelled from Focus Country to Focus Country, collecting stamps in their passports after learning more about the diversity of the Focus Countries this year and trying out some new sports in the gym.
On stage Germany performed Snow White from the Brothers Grimm with Ms Buetow & Grade 1 students, while their main room focus was Hessen. Grade 2 students performed some traditional Latin & South American songs accompanied by Mr. Kulbeida and Ms Gravano on the guitar. Spanish music and the Tango was also featured in their room.
UK students entertained us with their version of St George and the Dragon. In the UK room visitors were treated to traditional British fayre as well as being educated about the different regions of the UK. Malaysian students showed us a traditional Malaysian dance on stage and students could try out a traditional game in their classroom. Students’ work was displayed in all of the Focus Country Rooms.
In the gym students got to try their hand at Handball, soccer, badminton and Sepaktakraw, a traditional Malaysian sport as well as bean bag and three-legged races. Parent Network provided home-made cakes in the beautifully decorated cafeteria, while Sodexo offered Focus Country related hot food and refreshments.
We would like to thank everyone who helped contribute to another successful International Day, in particular Parent Network, SLO, Sodexo, ISF staff and teachers, and of course our sponsors.
A special thank you to the PN International Rep: Ms. Bechler; German Reps, Ms. Liedtke & Ms. Fuhrmann - Latin & South American Reps:, Ms. Buss, Ms. Gravano, Ms. Wolbert-Lichtenstein & Ms. Warzecha-Pinto - Malaysian Reps., Ms. Abraham & Ms. Abdulah and UK Rep, Ms. Moenan, for all their hard work which was much appreciated!
Anti-Bullying Poster Contest
The Anti-Bullying Poster Contest has now come to an end. ISF students have done an amazing job and it was a difficult decision finding a winner. The students' work is on the bulletin board near reception and the winning posters on the screen at reception. The winners will receive a trophy and certificate at the Term 1 awards ceremony. Great Job!!
1st Place Avni S., KG1A
2nd Place Nika G., 7B
and Veronika K., 1A
Winning posters will be submitted to SABIS® and worldwide recognition will be given to the school and the artist. All students submitting a poster will receive an Anti-Bullying Campaign (ABC) certificate from SABIS®.
A second project from the SABIS® Anti-Bullying Campaign has now been received. This will involve quotes which will be discussed with students and their teachers. It will give all children the chance to speak openly and learn about the importance of stopping bullying. We are sure this month will be a great success and hopefully bring a lot more awareness to the subject.
Halloween parties followed by an all-night Lock-in party
Friday, October 28 saw many different events being held at the school focusing on Halloween. The Primary School started the fun with their Halloween parties followed by an all-night Lock-In party for Grade 5-6. Throughout the day, many teachers participated in the Spirit Day celebrations dressing up with some unusual and elaborate costumes. Ms Walker was voted Best Teacher Costume. The Student Life Organization® would like to thank all teachers who participated in the day especially those who joined us for the long but fun overnight lock-in shift. As usual the Parent Network have done a fantastic job culminating in a fun packed day for our young students. Thanks to all involved.

Grade 11 and 12 Students Perform Robert Sheridan's The Rivals

For the second year running a group of Grade 11 and Grade 12 students successfully performed a classic English comedy, giving three performances, as part of their IB CAS requirements.
Sheridan’s The Rivals, first performed in 1775, presented the actors with many challenges as rehearsals began last spring. The cast of twelve, as part of the magical process of moving the text from page to stage had to acquire the essentials skills of the actor: understanding of their roles and lines, timing, spacial awareness and how to use voice and physicality to communicate in an effective and engaging way with the audience. This required great commitment and dedication from the acting company over the months involved in rehearsal, and Mr. Slesser believes that they successfully delivered Sheridan’s play in an entertaining and diverting manner.
This year, for the first time, in addition to the evening performances on 27 and 28 October, ISF staged a matinee for the whole of the Upper Secondary students. This was a potentially daunting experience for the actors but in the event the show was well received, and the audience appreciated the hours that had gone into performing such a challenging play. As a project that combined a clear academic dimension with creative flair and discipline, the students derived considerable benefit from it. They functioned exceptionally well as an acting company; the memories of the time they spent in “Bath” where the comic misunderstandings were played out and finally resolved will stay with us all for a long time to come.
Getting the Year Off to a Good Start: Team Building Workshops for Grades 7 and 8

Lower Secondary Drama Production:
Funny Business 2011
The ISF lower secondary drama students are very keen to present
their up and coming rendition of: Funny Business 2011, two evenings
of comedic entertainment; displaying various comedic techniques,
which tend to alter our perspective of the world. The students will
perform in two one act plays as well as a sketch that will engage the
audience through the methods of exaggeration, absurdism, character
inconsistency and surprise. The pupils acting in this theatrical
production hope to challenge the reality of distinct global scenarios
that will inspire a new way in which to view the world. Our young
actors and actresses at ISF, who will be performing in this comedic
endeavor, are:

ISF Student Julius C. Wins and Takes His Class on a Field Trip
Julius C. took part in a contest and won the prize to invite his
class to a grain farm in Zeilsheim. This field trip then took place on
October 5, 2011.
The students had some inspiring and interesting hours at the farm as
well as at the field. They learned a lot about the different grains, they
made flour from grains, found out the way from grain to bread and
much more.
A big thank you to the homeroom teacher Ms. Allen as well as
Ms. Oboth-C. and Ms. Buss for chaperoning this trip – and not
to forget to Ms. Andorfer of Taxibus who sponsored the safe bus
transfer to the farm in Zeilsheim and back to school.
ISF Model United Nations (MUN) Warsaw Conference
Tuesday 18th October saw twelve ISF students and
three staff members leave Germany to take part in
this year’s Model United Nations conference held in
Warsaw, Poland.
The IB diploma students of the Bartoly School in
Warsaw hosted our trip and on the first day gave us a
tour of Warsaw including an amazing visit to the
Warsaw Uprising Museum. Six hours later the ISF
students were back at the hotel studying and
practising for the conference. The night ended with a
meal in an authentic Polish restaurant, serenaded by
traditional Polish music.
The conference began with opening speeches from
over 20 nations, held in the magnificent Ballroom of
the Presidential Palace. Isaac v.,
representing France and Emma S., representing
Venezuela both produced highly professional and
motivating speeches which their audience of over
300 reacted to with some vigour. Our ISF students
spent the next two and a half days in fierce debate
with the other delegates, seeking to pass a motion
on their specialised subject. The MUN Conference
culminated in a fierce closing debate on the situation
in Libya.
The closing ceremony and awards saw Kiuree K.
win the best delegate for human rights. This was a
great honour for her and for our ISF MUN Team. All of our ISF students worked extremely hard and threw
themselves into debate with professionalism and
with great enthusiasm as we could all feel very proud of them.
Ms. Puri, Ms. Ormerod and Mr. Waddell would like to thank all our students for their hard work and
dedication, which made this trip such a memorable one for all participants.
We would like to thank these three dedicated members of staff for making this wonderful event
possible for our pupils.
ISF Players’ Production of Richard Sheridan’s
The Rivals

This year’s Senior Play is the classic English comedy The Rivals by Richard Sheridan first performed in 1761.
Our performers from Grades 11 and 12 have been rehearsing for the last few months under the direction of Mr. Williams, and the cast is now looking forward to sharing the results of its labours with a responsive audience who enjoy being entertained.
This great comedy will be staged, like last years, at carpet level in front of the main stage ensuring a far more intimate relationship between performers and audience. It is also being staged in period costume so the production will look stunning.
The students involved earn CAS points for their involvement but in addition they derive huge benefit from this experience. They are a fantastic cast this year and I hope that you will come to one of the two performances and support them.
The play is being staged on Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th of October starting at 6.30 pm. Please purchase your tickets from Reception.
See you there!

ISF Exhibited at the Newcomers Festival
On Sunday, 25 September from 13:00-18:00 hrs, ISF will exhibit at the annual Newcomers Festival at the Römer in the centre of Frankfurt. Around 5000 visitors and 80 exhibitors attended including area international schools and organizations, as well as some state and city institutions.
This year, G11 students Maria T. and Marina B. delighted the audience with two songs from Bruno Mars, followed by an exquisite dance routine from the very talented G8 student Brittany G.. Mr Slesser encouraged visitors to come to our stand which was manned by the Marketing team with the help of some enthusiastic G11 SLO volunteers. We were happy to welcome some familiar faces, as well as other exhibitors and visitors including Deputy Mayor Uwe Becker, who was accompanied by the organizer of the event, David Hart.
We would like to thank everyone who supported us at this very successful event.
For more information, visit Newcomers Network.
ISF SLO® Training Camp

Nearly 100 SLO® prefects along with 6 teachers on Saturday, 17 September took off from ISF for the annual SLO® Training Camp. The children arrived at Edersee Youth Hostel. It was not long before they started the first activity a 3-hour GPS hike. Enroute the students had to work out and play many different bonding games. The instructors were impressed with how easy our ISF students bonded. The camp was organized by our Head Prefect Alyssa K. and all activities ran by our Deputy Head prefects.
They had the chance to train their own prefects so when back at ISF the SLO® department would really be up and running in all departments. Our Deputy Heads did a fantastic job of training and bonding their teams. We have already seen the rewards of the training camp as the atmosphere and work ethic in the SLO® is a joy to see. The students will remember the camp for different reason, it may well be the excellent BBQ, campfire with marshmallows, beach volleyball or the many activities that produced such a strong bond. Watching young people interact, work together in harmony and above all enjoy themselves was very satisfying.
ISF SLO® Run-a-Thon Raised Almost 1000€ for Cancer Research

Research. Thank you to all who supported the event by either participating
or by sponsoring runners.
A special thank you goes out to Moritz v. H. (6B) for
running the furthest (44 laps!) and to Jette O. (6B) who
raised the most money at 100€. We would also like to
thank the Parent Network for their donation of 200€ and to
the Sodexo crew for supplying all of the water and other
refreshments for runners.
Thank you to Aziz U., Fillipo F., and Rickard O. for
providing the entertainment. It was a very fun day!
ISF's Continued Success on the IB Dipoma Programme

Congratulations to the students, teaching staff and administration on a job well done!
Senior Class Bonding Trip in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

This past weekend around fifty of our 12th grade students
traveled down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for the annual
senior bonding trip. Accompanied by Mr. May, Mr.
Suminski, Ms. Gutnayer, Ms. Martin-Martin, and Mr. and
Mrs. Jackson, the students were led through a jam-packed
weekend of team building activities, high-ropes courses,
and scenic hikes through the beautiful German Alps. The
highlight for most students was challenging themselves
with the high-ropes course on Saturday and helping each
other make it through either by leading the way and sharing advice or by offering encouragement during particularly difficult elements.
The bonding continued on
Saturday with a few team-building challenges that
stretched the physical endurance and mental patience of
the fatigued students and required thoughtful reflection
on individual and team performance. After an outdoor
barbecue the students then used their remaining energy
for a night hike up to some castle ruins overlooking the
town with a beautiful view of the moon. On Sunday the fun continued with another hike through Partnachklamm (Partnach Gorge) which was absolutely breathtaking. All
in all, the trip was a great success with many thanks to those involved with the planning. Consider the ISF Senior Class of 2012 bonded and ready to finish this year strong!
ISF Achieves Excellent Public Examination Results

ISF has had an excellent start to the year and is very pleased to be able to report that its
public examination results were again excellent this year.
In IGCSE, taken by pupils in Grades G10-11, ISF recorded a 94% pass rate with 48% of all passes being the
top grades of A* or A. Last year, the world pass rate was 77%.

In the Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations, ISF Grade 12 student recorded a 90% pass rate with
almost 40% of all passes being the top grade of 5. Last year, the world pass rate was 62%.
In the IB Diploma Examination, ISF recorded an 88.4% pass rate for the full IB Diploma. The world pass
rate this year is 77.75%. 84% of the ISF diplomas awarded were the most prestigious bi-lingual diplomas.
83% of ISF applicants fulfilled the criteria to gain a German Abitur.
Most remarkably one ISF student, Konstantin S. scored the maximum score of 45 points in the
IB Diploma. To put this in perspective, only 90 students among the 41,000 who were awarded the IB
Diploma worldwide achieved maximum points. This was a truly amazing achievement! (See more statistics above.)
The list of universities to which our ISF class of 2011
has graduated is very impressive and most
international. It includes universities located outside
of Germany such as, the London School of
Economics (UK), University College London (UK), the
University of Chicago (USA), the University of
Pennsylvania (USA), KAIST (Korea), Universidad
Complutense (Spain), Université de Haute Alsace
(France), Erasmus Rotterdam (Netherlands), Manipal
University (U.A.E.), Delhi Technological University
(India), Vienna University of Economics and Finance,
as well as German universities such as Frankfurt
School of Finance, the Cologne Business School,
Berlin Charité, TU Darmstadt and WHU-Otto
Beisheim School of Management, among others.
Such outstanding good results are further proof of
the high quality and consistency of the SABIS®
system of education. The SABIS® network of schools
is a beacon of excellence in the world of
international education, and ISF is very proud to be
a member of it. ISF should, of course, also recognize
the hard work of its pupils and the dedication of
its teachers, who worked together to achieve
results, of which we can all feel most proud. Finally,
ISF must not forget the strong support of its
parents, the linchpin of any child's success story.
ISF Summer Camp in Mecklenburgische Seenplatte
During every ski break in February, ISF Head of PE Mr. Scholz-Beitz organizes an ISF ski trip to Austria. This year, he also put together a summer camp for grades 5 and up to the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, an area in northeastern Germany filled with a thousand lakes. Twelve girls and boys joined him and two chaperones, Mr. Skenderovic and Mrs. Tobias, on the trip to the Ferieninsel Tietzowsee, July 2-9, 2011.
This peninsula is located at the edge of the little town Zechlinerhütte, just 90 kilometers north of Berlin. As one student had suspected, "A camp Mr. Scholz-Beitz organizes must be filled with sports activities", and this camp was dominated by outdoor activities. Unfortunately, the first two days the weather did not corporate, and it rained non-stop.
Luckily the kids and chaperones did not get discouraged by the rain and played games like Hide & Seek, made a trip to the local forest museum, did bonding activities and went on a bike tour to the nearby city Rheinsberg. The weather cleared up just in time for a scary night walk, which did not only freak out some boys and girls, but also Mrs. Tobias! The following morning the sun came out and the group took a 5-hour paddle boat tour.
The Mecklenburgische Seenplatte offers lakes which are all connected with each other through canals. Some of the canals are very narrow with tree branches reaching into the water, and some of them are very wide allowing several canoes to paddle alongside each other. The mid-station of the paddle tour was a nice pizza place where everyone had lunch. On the way back, Mr. Skenderovic lead the tour and looked for a nice place to stop and swim. One crew capsized their canoe, which triggered other students to jump into the lake and start a huge water fight as Mr. Scholz-Beitz and Mrs. Tobias dragged and secured the canoe to a cove that Mr. Skenderovic had discovered. A way to turn an upset into great fun!
With the weather being so nice the following day, the group took a bus tour to the high rope course “Kletterwald Mirow”. Three hours gave everybody plenty of time to try out all of the different courses that the complex offered. Some students were still tired from the canoe trip the day before, but all of them managed to climb up the challenging courses.
Those two strenuous sports-filled days called for a reward. The students and chaperones took a bike ride to Rheinsberg and ate ice cream at an ice cream parlor that offers 365 different kinds of flavors – including the flavor garlic! Alternative Olympics was the topic of that afternoon. The students were divided into three groups who had to compete against each other in different events: balancing a cup of water on a plastic canopy over a rope, discovering a cup from an “acid lake”, and climbing through a bike tube without touching it. After lunch each student competed against each other in the following contests: tea bag throwing, frisbee throwing, and archery. To finish off a fun day, 18 students joined Mr. Scholz-Beitz and Mrs. Tobias on a night paddling tour with torches. This paddle tour ended with a big fireworks display at the jetty of the Tietzowsee, organized by the owner of the campgrounds.
The last day of the summer camp started off with a cart race around the campground. Seven pre-races, three semi-final races and one grand finale race determined the winner, Liam R., with Niels F. in second place, and Natascha S. in third place. The afternoon was filled with swimming in the lake, playing beach soccer and one round of “Kirschkernweitspucken” (cherry pit spitting contest). After dinner, all huts had to be cleaned up and all suitcases needed to be packed. To make the last evening as memorable as the entire trip, the students were asked to perform in a talent show. The girls separated into two dance groups, and the boys had one big group performance. All three performances earned a huge round of applause as all of them did amazing jobs. As a reward, Mr. Skenderovic grilled meat and a self-caught fish, Mr. Scholz-Beitz passed out the dough for bread on sticks, and Mrs. Tobias handed out marshmallows to melt over a fire.
Hopefully, all students had as great of a time as the three chaperones. A big “thank you” goes to Mr. Scholz-Beitz who organized a great trip and succeeded in “putting some muscles on every participant”, reported several students during the long trip back home!

“First Day” - Grade 1
The Grade 1 students and their families will start their first day of Primary School with a Welcome Coffee outside in front of the courtyard at 09:00h followed by a brief welcome ceremony starting at 9:30h and ending at about 10:10h in the Theatre. There will be a short greeting and address by the Director and
Co-ordinator. Each child will then be called up to the stage to join his/her new teacher and homeroom group.
Please encourage your child to leave you at this point and join his/her classmates. We know this time of “separation” can be stressful for some children (and difficult for parents, too), but keeping positive and enthusiastic usually helps smooth over any first day “fears and tears”. When the whole homeroom is together, the teacher will take the children to their classroom. That will be the beginning of their school day with their teacher.
In the classroom, Grade 1 students will receive a traditional "Schultüte" from a Grade 2 child. A Schultüte is a conical bag of sweets and school supplies given to children on their "Erster Schultag" (first day) of Primary School. A professional photographer will take individual and class pictures later in the day; children may bring the Schultüte they receive from their family for the photograph. The Grade 1 students will have a "normal" school day after the welcome ceremony – ending at 15:25h.
Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 08:15h
“First Day” - Kindergarten
Students and parents, upon arrival, should wait on the KG playground until called to the classrooms at 08:15h. This first day will be a full day for everyone – ending at 15:25h for KG2 and at 15:05h for KG1.
Back-to-School Nights

Thursday, September 08, 2011, Grades 1 to 6 from 19:00 - 20:30h
This is an opportunity for parents to meet teachers and hear a brief presentation about the curriculum their children will study this school year.
AY 2010-11 Goes Out With a Yee-Haw!

Thursday, Friday and Saturday night of the week of 20 June, there was a packed audience at the ISF Theatre for the year’s school musical, Footloose. Over 1100 friends, family and teachers attended and were given an evening to remember. Students from 7th to 12th grade acted, sang, and danced like true professionals as the audience cheered their way through the whole show.
The Footloose staff spent nearly nine months preparing the students for this wonderful
occasion, and as usual they exceeded all expectations. The whole staff would like to thank everyone
involved and especially those that came along to support the Footloose cast.
Preparations are already underway
for the next production, We Will Rock You. We look forward to another amazing show.
Our sincere thanks must go to the four teachers who worked so hard over nine months to produce this triumph;
Mr. Waddell, Ms. Yildiz, Ms. Ormerod and Mr. Kulbeida deserve amply all of the accolades they have
received.
ISF School Sports Teams Very Successful in 2010/11
Term III has been very busy for sporty students at ISF Internationale Schule Frankfurt-Rhein-Main. Eight GISST tennis players took part in the GISST U14 & Varsity Tennis Tournament at Leipzig International School, May 19-20. Due to heavy rainfall on Saturday, flooding all courts no cross over’s or final matches played and no GISST points awarded. Congratulations to Lucie S., Carolina M., Carolin
K., Laura S.,
Vincent B., Kevin W., Tim and Max V., winning
team of Pool B.
On May 23rd, 24 young swimmers from 1st to 6th grade represented ISF at the GISST Interschool Swimming Gala in Berlin. Alex Morris won in impressive fashion, beating his opponents by nearly a length and brought home six gold medals.
Most successful ISF female athlete was Anne-Therese V.

Each student was involved in five events plus relays in a very tight schedule of heats and final races. Because of the warm hospitality of our ISF parents who housed 150 international athletes and the amazing support from ISF housing representatives, Ms. Stone and Ms. Henning, the maintenance staff, Mr. Huysmans and Mr. Kreuz, Mr. Völker with his team from Sodexo, PE staff, State of Hesse
Athletics Federation, SV Board Members and many parents this
tournament was a raving success.

V. won the Discus gold medal and in total ISF Varsity Girls
were ranking 5th place.
ISF Varsity Boys earned the 3rd place, best athlete Filippo F. (gold
medal in 400m) followed by Nicholas T., silver in the 400m final,
Philipp P., silver in Discus and Kevin E., silver medal in 800m.
Beside the official 24 GISST athletes, ISF sent a U14 girls and boys B
team to give them the opportunity to show their abilities after a long term
practice and an idea if they would continue their commitment in 2011/12.
Congratulations to all ISF Track & Field athletes! We are looking
forward to compete next year on June 1-2 at Bavarian International
School.
The very last opportunity to earn points for the OVERALL GISST was
the GISST Golf Tournament on June 9th to 10th at the Stuttgart
International School (ISS). Jan R., Christian W., Julian G.,
Ben Luca N., Luvuyo S. and Nicholas F., six
nominated students from ISF tried hard to play their HCP. ISF came in
4th place, one point behind BBIS who came in third place for golf while
Berlin International School (BerIS) won the tournament and Stuttgart
came in 2nd.
After the golf tournament the overall GISST results have been presented and the Peter Murphy Award trophy has been awarded to Berlin Brandenburg International School (BBIS) with 54 pts.
Congratulations to all ISF GISST competitors involved in nine different sports and holding the second place in the OVERALL GISST Ranking 2010/11 with 52 pts. Thank you to all coaches for their outstanding efforts and the entire ISF community.

No Need to Sing, "Rain, rain, go away" at 2011 Sommerfest
On Saturday 21st May, we celebrated our 7th annual Sommerfest
at ISF and managed to keep the rain away again this year.
Various sporting activities and entertainment for all age groups
were on offer. Younger students tackled the obstacle course and
tried out the bouncy castle, while the older ones played
basketball and soccer.
This year Sodexo produced international specialities and a
barbecue, while Parent Network supplied a delicious array of
cakes. In the Talent Show budding stars performed in the
theatre to a packed audience. A singer / pianist and dancers
featured in the top 3. The Kenyan project raised the grand sum
of €650 from their tombola with the top prize of 2 Lufthansa tickets within Europe. Footloose stars rounded off
the day with a preview of hits from this year’s School Musical.
2011 Inkwell!
The 2011 version of Inkwell
was delivered from the
printer’s last Friday and is
now available for purchase
priced 8€.
The team of student editors
faced an almost impossible task this year as the quantity of high quality prose, poetry
and artwork was huge which made the selection of the final pieces immensely
difficult.
At left is the wonderful front cover, created by one of our
Grade 10 students, Avantika R. The Inkwell logo itself
was designed by a member of the Editorial Team, Jun
Woo P. Inkwell is the result of many, many hours of work and
reflects the impressive dedication and commitment of the
students involved. It is also a credit to our school and to
its commitment to the highest standards possible.
Please support our students by purchasing your copy of
Inkwell from Reception.

ISF Students Impress with MUN Presentation at International
Stammtisch

On Monday 6 May, 6 ISF students, supported by
Ms Puri, gave a presentation of the Model
United Nations (MUN) at the International
Stammtisch in the English Theatre. After a few
words from Mr. Slesser, Pierre O.
(G11) gave a short introduction to an
audience of around 100 Stammtisch regulars
and newcomers, explaining how MUN attempts
to simulate proceedings at the United Nations.
Through the General Assembly, councils and
committees, the MUN fosters international
peace and cooperation, transgressing national
boundaries. The audience were given an insight into the workings of one such
committee during a simulated debate on an amendment for Lesbian,
Gay and Transgender Rights chaired by Tania B. (G11), with
delegates representing China (Naomi P. G9), the Russian
Federation (Aziz U. G11), Saudi Arabia (Genie H. G11), Singapore (Varsha V. G11) and the United Kingdom
(Pierre). The ISF students in formal dress and using elevated
language appropriate to the MUN, impressed the audience with their
debating skills and ability to represent their allocated nations.
“MUN is an activity which truly produces commendable thinkers”, Pierre commented, a point which he and Aziz adeptly illustrated, fielding challenging questions from the audience. Musical entertainment was then provided by Genie, Tania and Hin Seon R. (G11), sporting ISF-Truly International T-shirts, performing their dance mix which was
awarded 2nd place at the Sommerfest Talent Show.
Both the MUN presentation and dance routine went down very well with
the Stammtisch audience, reflecting the many talents and diverse
student body which ISF is very proud of.
As Pierre summed up in his introduction, “MUN gave me the feeling that
I had accomplished something”, a sentiment reflected by numerous
guests who were very impressed that students of this age could give a
presentation of such high calibre. As one guest commented, “I kept
having to remind myself that these were 16 & 17 year old students on stage, not mature adults!”
Earth Day-Spirit Day Friday, May 6th

ISF Earth Day Spirit Day was a great success! ISF participated in a number of activities that put green thinking at the forefront of our minds.
• Green Ideas Apple Tree: Look out for the ideas tree in the
reception area this week!
• Video montage of our planet playing in the foyer
• Energy Saving: Turn off all your light bulbs!
• ISF Courtyard Garden Design Competition
• Earth Day Sound track- SLO Radio was in effect with songs
about our planet from 08:00 to 08:30am
• Those who came to school dressed in green received
candy
• Cycle to work
• Litter picking in the school/local community
To conclude ISF’s Earth Week initiatives, students took to the
surrounding community to pick up litter. Fifteen students joined Mr. Rees
during Period 9 to spruce up Sindlingen. Then after school, 15 students
from the SLO™ Social Responsibility Department and the Deputy Head
team joined Mr. Hagan to clean up around Zeilsheim. We hope
participation in this annual event will grow each year. A big thank you to all of those who participated and gave up a sunny Friday afternoon to give back to their community.
Good Luck to Students Taking Exams!

Those parents with children in Grades 10-12 will be well aware that from this week until mid-June that students are engaged in taking public examinations at IGCSE, AP and IB Diploma Level.
The ISF community may have noticed that parents and friends of our graduating class, along with the Parent Network have festooned the entrance way to the school with very creative and colourful good luck banners to encourage our pupils during these vital examinations.
ISF students have been well prepared for these examinations and, thus far, students and teachers have been quite happy with
the content of the exam papers taken, judging them to be fair tests of what has been taught.
However, as we all know in life, sometimes a little bit of good luck helps us on our way, so School Director Angus Slesser is sure that everyone would like to join him in wishing all those students every good luck in these very important examinations.
ISF Celebrates HUGE Successes in the IGCSE Exams!
ISF is proud to announce that it has received 5 top awards in the June 2010 International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations from University of Cambridge.

ISF hosts its 2nd Annual World Football Tournament
The 2nd annual ISF World Football Tournament took place Friday April
1st. The tournament attracted teams from all over the community and
included over 70 players. The Tournament went for 5 gruelling hours.
The Bulldog made an appearance to warm up the crowd. Be sure to
keep an eye out for the Bulldog Name Competition coming soon to
homerooms.
The winning team, led by G12 Aaron Z., came out on top after a
thrilling penalty shot out. A big thank you goes out to G11 Evan M. for organizing the event. Jusuf S. refereed the event and

ISF students in Second Place and Top Five at Entrepreneurs
of Tomorrow Awards Ceremony!
For the third year running the American German Business Club in
Frankfurt have run a Business Plan competition for young people aged
between 17 and 22. This year 16 teams from 6 German and
international schools including ISF completed the five month
programme, guided by business professionals and culminating in a
presentation from the Top Five entries. No less than two ISF teams
achieved a place in the Top Five – a great achievement, considering that
they were amongst the youngest participants.
Alyssa Kirst (G11) and Isabel Lightbody took second place with their
plan to introduce “Pink Taxis” to
Frankfurt, providing safe
transport for women and children
with female drivers. Genie Huang
and Michelle Lokyi Yung (G11)
were in the top five with their plan
to facilitate “Medical Treatment in
Germany” for Chinese nationals.
A team from the Taunus Gymnasium in Königstein won
the competition with “Mr Shop”,
an internet shopping scheme.
After the ceremony students had an opportunity to talk to members of
the American German Business Club as well as the American Consul
General, Mr Alford, who were all very impressed in the scope of
business plans this year as well as the quality of the presentations from
the Top Five teams.
This is an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurial Grade 11 students to gather CAS points and gain an insight into the business world. Economics teacher, Mr Gossard, encouraged the ISF teams throughout the process and was very impressed in the effort, enthusiasm and commitment shown by the Grade 11 students, given their already heavy
IB schedule. Congratulations to our ISF teams on their well-thought out
business plans and excellent presentations, enhancing our reputation
within the business community!
Fasching at ISF
All children from KG to Grade 4 celebrated Fasching on March 8,
2011. Everybody had a lot of fun! Our Thank You goes to the
Parent Network and in particular to Fabiola Torres, Jen Lewis,
Sabine Fuhrmann, Steve Völker (Sodexo), and the many helpful
volunteers who contributed their time to make the Fasching
Party such a great success.

Thirteen ISF Students Build with Habitat for Humanity in Poland
During winter break, thirteen grade 11 and 12
students from ISF travelled to Gliwice, Poland, to support the
internationally recognized charity ‘Habitat for Humanity’ (HFH).
These students, accompanied by Ms Yildiz, volunteered to take part
in the project partly to fulfill requirements for the CAS component
of their IB Diploma and also through sheer goodwill. The students
came together to begin preparation and fundraising early in
September and spent the next five months seeking cooperate
sponsorship and learning about what their team experience in
Gliwice would entail.

HFH are a non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe and secure housing for people in need around the world with the help of Philanthropic groups and individuals from all walks of life. The project is a hands-on experience, where the students first
spend months raising money for materials and travel, then, work alongside the families and organizations involved to help
build a safe and secure home.

We would like to thank the following sponsors for their
support of our students, and of HFH:
• Lufthansa
• Ung Michael Klumpp
• SABIS®
• Wolfram Berthold
• Lands End GmbH
• Stephan Bulawa – Energy-Imaging
• Dr. Nicholas Matten
• Wienerberger GmbH
• Westrich Reise Center
• Bearingpoint GmbH
• DAEWOO International

This project was a very special one as it was not only to
assist one family, but many women and their children, to
help them, firstly survive and then to re-build their lives.
The project involved the renovation of a large building
which was 100 years old, to prepare it for opening in 2012
as a homeless women’s shelter. This cause touched all the
ISF team members and provided the necessary motivation for the five days of labour.
The time on the building site proved to be a feat of
mental perseverance and personal motivation for the
group. The team renovated 88 window panes over the
course of five days, including sanding and paint stripping.
This tedious, but pivotal task, tested even the most
patient of those involved but to the credit of all,
perseverance reined. Congratulations to Adrian K.,
Nicholas T., Jin Seon R., Joo Hyung P., Evan
M., Manuela A., Maud S., Ana Sophia
J., Isabella F., Yu Jin J., Hee Jin S., Sun Young
K. and Jeong Whan O. for a wonderful effort and for
showing the best of themselves everyday!

Upper Secondary Students Attend Colleges Fair at ISF
Representatives from universities in Europe visited the ISF campus on
Tuesday, February 15th, to present their programs and allow students
to visit their tables, collecting information on courses and admission
requirements. These colleges situated in some of the most beautiful
European cities including Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Brussels, London,
Bremen and Vienna offer American style degree programs accredited
either in the United States or have state recognition in their host
countries, with English as the language of instruction. All of the
institutions offer degree programs that parallel those of colleges and
universities in the USA, both in their flexible structures and in their approach to teaching: small classes, high
professor/student ratios, participatory classroom experiences and extensive travel programs. Their student bodies
are very diverse, continuing the truly international learning environment students experience at ISF.
Approximately 100 Grade 10, 11 and 12 students attended this event
and crowded the tables, asking the representatives from the American
University of Paris, Jacobs University Bremen, Carl Benz School -
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Vesalius College Brussels, Touro
College Berlin, Saint Louis University Madrid, Webster University
Vienna/Geneva/Leiden, Hult Business School London and American
International University London their many questions. As explained to
our students, it is important to attend these college visits to begin
university research, learn to speak with and ask questions to university
admissions tutors, and collect information on courses they may be
interested in. With competition for university admission worldwide so
intense, it is smart to cast the net wide to look at interesting opportunities
both locally as well as on the international market to find the best
university ”fit”.
President of Korea University visits ISF
ISR was very happy and honoured recently to host the visit of
Professor Dr. Ki-Su Lee, the President of Korea University in
Seoul. Founded in 1905, the Korea University is one of Korea’s most prestigious and leading universities with a teaching faculty
of more than 3,000 and over 34,000 students. Professor Lee is
a very distinguished academic who gained a PhD in Tübingen
University in Germany and holds degrees from Japan and Russia
as well as Korea and he has been the President of the Korea
Law Professors Association.
Mr. Slesser was very pleased to welcome Professor Lee to ISF and to introduce him to an audience of more than 100 Korean parents from both ISF and FIS. Professor Lee spoke
to his audience about Korea
University and undergraduate
life there. Everyone who was
present enjoyed his talk
enormously and we all hope that
we have the pleasure of seeing
Professor Lee in ISF again.
First Annual Grade 7-9 Dance!
The first annual Grade 7-9 Dance went down Friday 04 February. We literally
tore the roof off the place with over 90 students attending the event. The
response has been overwhelming from those who attended, hailing it as
the ‘best event of the year.’ Sodexo served up some great mocktails and
the DJ had the place jumping all night. A big thank you goes out to the
Parent Network for covering a majority of the decoration costs. The
decoration construction could not have been successful without Ms.
Buetow and Claire Stone lending their creative talents for the infamous
balloon drop. A big thank you goes out to all the staff who helped
chaperone the evening and to Robin G. for documenting the night.

GISST Swim Tournament held at ISF
On Friday 28th January and Saturday 29th
January, the 2011 GISST Swim Tournament was held
at ISF. The housing of 117 athletes was required for
this event and was very successfully carried out by a
special group of families from the ISF community.
On
behalf of ISF, Sportverein and the visiting athletes
from Bonn International School, Berlin International
School, British Berlin School, Berlin Brandenburg International School, Dresden International School,
International School Stuttgart, Bavarian International
School and guest school Copenhagen International
School, we on the housing team would like to give a
very BIG THANK YOU to all those families who
housed. The housing team was again very privileged
to work with such a flexible, warm, organized and
helpful group of volunteers who helped
tremendously to make the job of housing the
athletes run smoothly.
Extra special thanks go to
those families who at the very last minute had to
rearrange their housing offers to adapt to the visiting
schools’ requirements and those that housed
athletes for two nights from Denmark – we really appreciated that! We would also like to thank all those families who offered to house and were not required for this event due to the fact that the athletes did not show.
The late arrival of two schools on the day and
confusion with competition procedure also meant
that the competition ran late which took its toll on
all (tired athletes and housing parents) involved with
housing. But nevertheless due to Ms. Henning
attempting to contact all housing families on Friday
night, we hope no-one was too inconvenienced! The
help of our ISF SLO® Marshalls was also gratefully
appreciated.
ISF was the overall winner of the GISST Swim
Tournament with 428 points!!!
WELL DONE EVERYBODY AND ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU!
Visit of Former District President
On January 25th, 2011 the former District President for the Administrative District of Düsseldorf, Mr. Büssow,
visited ISF for the second time. Previously he had come to see ISF with the Minister of Education from North Rhine
Westphalia (NRW).
On this occasion Mr Büssow was accompanied by the Chairman of the
Board of the “Freie Christliche Schulen
e.V.” – a group of six private schools in
NRW – and two of his school directors. The group had come to learn more about
the SABIS® philosophy of education and
the SABIS® methodologies.
Mr Slesser made a presentation about SABIS® and ISF and the group toured the
school. Our visitors were delighted by
what they saw and learned and
Mr Büssow as promised to return to ISF
with the new NRW minister for education.

Lower Primary Parent-Teacher Conferences in Late March
The Lower Primary Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held after school on Tuesday-Thursday on 29-31 March 2011. Parents will receive all details from Ms. Jarque at least 2 weeks beforehand explaining the procedure of the conferences along with a form for convenient time slots.
Teenage “Stern Singers” visit Kindergarten
Teenage “Stern Singers” dressed as the Three Wise Men from the East
came to ISF on Friday, 7th January to sing for the children in Kindergarten
and grades 1 and 2.
For over 160 years all across
Germany, children and
teenagers have taken it upon
themselves to volunteer to
dress up as “The Three
Kings” or “Three Wise Men”
from the East and go to homes, schools and churches to
sing and collect money to give to charity. All the money
collected goes to children in need (“Kinder in Not”).

3rd Annual ISF Alumni Reception
The 3rd annual ISF Alumni Reception was held on Wednesday, 05 January from 16:15-18:00 pm in the Sports Cafeteria. ISF
invited alumni from 1996-2010 as well as all Grade 12 students. There was a wonderful turnout with over 40 alumni
in attendance. All teachers were invited and several came to catch up with their former students. ISF School Director Mr. Slesser would like to
thank everyone that organized and supported this event particularly Ms Jackson and her team of G11 students.
We are already looking forward to next year’s event!

Sinterklaas Visits the ISF Primary School
Organized by the Dutch and Belgium parents at ISF, Sinterklaas made his annual visit to ISF last
Friday, 3. December. All students in KG through Grade 2, and well behaved staff and administration,
received a small bag of typical Dutch goodies; called ‘Pepernoten’, ‘Kruidnoten’ and ‘Schuimpjes’.
The Feast of Sinterklaas, or St. Nicholas, is an annual event which has been uniquely Dutch and
Flemish for centuries. St. Nicholas' Feast Day, December 6th, is observed in most Roman Catholic
countries primarily as a feast for small children. But it is only in the Low Countries - especially in the
Netherlands - that the eve of his feast day (December 5th) is celebrated nationwide by young and
old, Christian and non-Christian,
and without any religious
overtones.
Although Sinterklaas is always
portrayed in the vestments of the
bishop he once was, his status as a canonized saint has had little to do with the way the
Dutch think of him. Rather, he is a kind of benevolent old man, whose feast day is
observed by exchanging gifts and making good-natured fun of each other. It so happens
that the legend of St. Nicholas is based on historical fact. He did actually exist. He lived
from 271 A.D. to December 6th, 342 or 343. His 4th century tomb in the town of Myra,
near the city of Anatolia in present-day Turkey, has even been dug up by archaeologists.
IB Art Students Take a "Voyage"
Five ISF students (four from grade 11
and one from grade 12) all from the IB
Art programme, travelled to Paris for
the weekend of 3-6th December. They
visited the Louvre, the Musée
d’Orsay, the Tokyo Palais, the
Museum of Modern Art and the
Pompidou Centre, and still found time
for a boat excursion down the Seine.
Our two Art teachers Mr.
Richard and Ms. Fraki were
chaperones.
Merci to them!
ISF Students at ECB Live Educational Games Launch with
Jean-Claude Trichet
On Wednesday 8
December the European
Central Bank (ECB) in
Frankfurt launched the
first two of a series of
educational games
aimed at young adults
studying Economics.
G12 students from
various local and
international schools
were invited to attend the launch and test “Economia – The Monetary
Policy Game”. Robin Greif, Anna Grünwald, Sang Hoon Kim, Marcus
Norbula and Felix Schalt represented ISF along with Mr Gossard
(Economics) and Ms Ife (Marketing). With the aid of an ECB expert and
online advice, students had to keep inflation below 2%, taking quarterly
interest rate decisions based on various factors and unexpected shocks.
The students found the games, which are designed to give students a better understanding of how the ECB makes its decisions on Monetary Policy, challenging and exciting. Mr Gossard found them a very useful tool to reinforce what is
taught in IB Economics.
ECB President, Jean-Claude Trichet, officially
launched the online
games, followed by a
photo shoot with all
participating students. If
you would like to try your
hand at Monetary Policy
decision-making, go to:

Winter Concerts Were Cookin'
The winter concerts for Kindergarten through to Grade 6 took place the
week of 06 December. Our highly motivated students presented wonderful erformances.
Thanks for all the hard work from the music department, teachers,
parents as well as our students. You all made this an outstanding event
and brought us into a joyous holiday mood.

UK University Fair 1st December
A number of Grade 11 students attended a university fair at Frankfurt University on the 1st December where approximately 30 universities
were represented including some top schools like University College London, Imperial,
Loughborough and the LSE. Needless to say our students were very
confident in approaching the admissions tutors and gained valuable
information about a range of courses including Medicine, Chemistry and
Computer Science. In addition it provided a further opportunity for us to
present the academic profiles of a number of our Grade 12 students who
are applying for entry in autumn 2011. Students who have already
applied have started to receive their offers; the acceptances we have
received include: Universities of Warwick, Bath, King’s London, Glasgow and Bristol for subjects ranging from Zoology and Physics to International Business and Soccer Studies/Sport Studies.
Applications to the UK/USA continue to go out – please note that the
final deadline for applications to the UK and the USA is January 15th.
ISF Participates in its First GISST Badminton Tourney
The first U14 Badminton team for the SV-ISF returned from the
recent GISST trip with some extra luggage after both the girls and the
boys teams placed first overall. The U14 and the Varsity team have
been training hard over the last few months, and the trip was full of
enthusiasm with high team spirit. The support from both teams was
fantastic and every player represented SV-ISF very well.
Congratulations to all members of the team, and thank you to Ms
Draper, Mr. Skenderovic and Mrs. Yang for coaching and chaperoning
the team.
U14 Boys Achieve a First in Leipzig
The U14 boys team participated in a 10-school football tournament hosted by Leipzig International school.
Prince Schülke and Uli Groh coached the team, and for the first time ever, ISF earned points for the overall GISST ranking. All players did a great job and got 2nd Place after a loss 1:3 against BBIS in the final! The final game was characterized in a strong physical power play.
ISF U14 football girls team had a great time at BBIS (BBIS Berlin Brandenburg International School). They tried hard and got 5th place. It has been a great experience for them. And even though, they didn't achieve their desired place, their smiles never left their faces. A special "thank you" goes to Coach Berti and Mr.s Schultze-Rhonhof who chaperoned the girls.
We all are looking forward for the Varsity Boys Soccer tournament in Berlin!
Diversity at ISF Shines through at International Day 2010
On Saturday 6 November, ISF held its 8th annual International Day. Festivities
began with the traditional flag-bearing ceremony with students from Grades 5
and above carrying flags from all 47 nations represented at ISF. This was followed
by some very varied and impressive Focus Country performances, after which
students eagerly travelled from Focus Country to Focus Country, collecting
stamps in their passports after learning more about the diversity of the Focus
Countries this year and trying out some new sports in the gym.
Germany performed "Little Red Riding Hood"
from the Brothers Grimm on stage with some Grade 2 students, while
their main room focus was a traditional German Christmas including a
Christmas tree with hand-made decorations, beautifully crafted by
Grades 1 & 2 students. India performed a traditional song followed by
modern Bollywood dances, choreographed and performed exquisitely
by Indian students from Grades 8-11. Mr Slesser lit a candle for
Diwali, while at the classroom visitors could view the traditional
Diwali coloured sand picture and have their hands painted with
henna.
Korean students impressed us with Taekwondo and a traditional Korean dance on stage as well as introducing us to some new sounds on traditional Korean
instruments. In the Korean room visitors were encouraged
to pronounce Korean words as well as being educated
about the Korean tea ceremony. Mr Kulbeida appeared
for the USA in his debut performance at ISF. In the
classroom students could participate in a variety of
activities and learn about the different American States. Kids Crafts and face painting were also on offer again this
year and in the gym students got to try their hand at
bowling, cricket, hoola hoops and some traditional Korean
sports.
Parent Network provided home-made cakes in the
beautifully decorated cafeteria, while Sodexo offered
Focus Country related hot food and refreshments. We
would like to thank everyone who helped contribute to
another successful International Day, in particular Parent
Network, SLO®, Sodexo, ISF staff and teachers, and of
course our sponsors.
SLO® Prefect Committee Established
Last Wednesday SLO® established its Prefect Committee and got everyone together for its
annual photograph for display in the reception. This year the SLO® has
added a new department ‘The Social Responsibility Department’. Here is your new SLO® team for
2010-11.
Excellent Comic Timing in ISF's "Earnest"
Written by School Director Mr. Slesser
Last week our very own ISF players
drawn from our Grades 11 and 12
performed Oscar Wilde ’s evergreen
comedy, “The Importance of Being
Earnest”. The success of this
quintessentially English comedy depends
on a deep understanding of the
subtleties of the English language,
excellent comic timing and a high level of acting skills and our ISF actors did not disappoint their audiences. The acting was excellent, the costumes were splendid and the set design allowed a very close contact with the audience.
I would like to congratulate our wonderful cast, those who worked behind the scenes, as well as those in front of
the house and I would particularly like to thank one of our parents, Ms. Stone for her work on the costumes. My
final vote of thanks goes to Roger Williams who produced and directed this fine play. We look forward eagerly to his next production.

ISF Celebrates SABIS® Anniversary with Sister Schools Worldwide
Friday 15th October marked a very important milestone in the history of ISF and SABIS®
because that day will mark the year-long kickoff of SABIS®'s 125th anniversary and the founding of the very first school opened in 1886 in Choueifat, Lebanon, a suburb of Beirut.
There, the founders Reverend Tanios Saad and Ms. Louisa Proctor brought together their vision, dedication, and ambition to provide basic education for Lebanese girls. Soon thereafter, the school became co-educational in response to market demand. In 1975 the International School of Choueifat expanded outside of Lebanon to become what is now known as the SABIS® School Network. The network consists of Member and Associate Member schools as well as schools under license that operate around the world.
Each school is financially and administratively independent; however, they do share one thing and that is their implementation of the SABIS® Educational System.
We in ISF are very proud to be a member of the worldwide SABIS® network that has been making such a positive difference in the world of education for
more than a century. The SABIS® network today comprises 79 schools and one university in 15 countries with over 60,000 students.
The anniversary celebrations in ISF were led by its SABIS Student Life Organization®. In school there were exhibitions,
posters, performances of music from around the world, a special gift for pupils and a large 125th Aniversary Cake, as well as
coffee for parents and a special anniversary dessert for our pupils. It was a day to remember not only at ISF but around the world.
1st Annual Europa Dodgeball Intramural Competition
On 07 October, Grade 7 homerooms squared off for the First Annual
Homeroom Intramural Dodge Ball Challenge. The Grade 8s will be
clashing on Period 6 Thursday of Week 7 and the Grade 9 Homerooms
to follow Monday October 25th Period 6. Trophies will be awarded for the
winning team.
Pakistan Flood Appeal via Penny Race and Clothes/Blankets Donation
ISF is bracing itself for a wave of fundraising for the Pakistan Flood
Appeal. It is important for us to keep the memory of the millions of
people affected by the disaster at the forefront of our
minds, particularly with the approach of colder weather there. We are
asking for donations of clothes, blankets and any medical supplies which
we will deliver to the NGO, Alhuda http://www.alhudapk.com/ who will
distribute these on the ground. Donations will be very welcome from next
week up until the 1st ´Spirit Day´ on Friday, October 29th where we
hope to raise extra money through fancy dress costumes and fun events
on the day! In addition years 1-8 will be taking part in a Penny Race with
homerooms attempting to out- do each other by donating any spare 1, 2,
5 and 10 cent coins to the Pakistan Flood Appeal.
ISF Celebrates Chuseok, the Korean Thanksgiving Festival
The week of 27 September, ISF was delighted to see members of its Korean
Community sharing the joys of the Chuseok Festival with the
rest of the school. We were treated to some traditional
Korean music and were able to play Korean folk games and
eat delicious rice cakes, all the while marvelling at the
beautiful Korean traditional costumes worn by our parents
and pupils.

ISF Rocks at Newcomers' Festival!
On 26 September ISF exhibited at the annual Newcomers
Festival at the Römer in the centre of Frankfurt. Around
5000 visitors and 80 exhibitors attended including
international schools and organizations in the area, as
well as some state and city institutions. This year our
Asian Rock Band, “Four
Beats” from Grade 10
gave an impressive
rendition of Pachelbel’s
Canon in D, followed by
instrumental Japanese
and American pieces.
Mr Slesser encouraged visitors to go to our stand which was manned by the Marketing
team with the help of some
excellent SLO® volunteers from
the higher grades. We were
happy to welcome some familiar
faces, as well as other exhibitors
and visitors including Deputy Mayor Uwe Becker, who
was accompanied by the organizer of the event, David
Hart. We would like to thank everyone who supported us
at this very successful event.
ISF Players Present The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
On Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th of October a group of Grade 12 students and one Grade 11 student will stage Oscar Wilde’s comic masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest. The students started rehearsing the play last year and are now in the final stages of its preparation.
This quintessentially English comedy that has as its philosophy according to Wilde, “…that we should treat all the trivial things of life seriously, and all the serious things of life with sincere and studied triviality,” contains some of the most famous comic lines ever written. The interrogation of Jack Worthing by the formidable Lady Bracknell that elicits from him that he has “lost” both his parents and that he
was discovered as a baby in a handbag in the cloakroom of Victoria Station is one of the comic highlights of the play that has been
enjoyed and savoured by thousands of audiences in the one hundred and fifteen years since the play was first performed in 1895 in London’s St James’s Theatre.
For two evenings next month Wilde’s exquisite comedy will be undergo that marvellous
transformation from “page to stage” in the ISF Theatre once more thanks to the impressive acting
skill and hard work of some of our senior students from ISF.
Pierre O., 11A is Algernon Moncrieff;
Zeynep M., 12B is Gwendolen Fairfax;
Sophie W., 12B is Lady Bracknell; and,
Delfina M., 12B is Cecily Cardew.
Please come and support them as a good audience lifts the performance tremendously.
Nine Points Already Scored for This Year's GISST Trophy
ISF's 33 Cross Country athletes already earned 9 points for the GISST League Overall trophy for the school's 2010-11 participation. This event was the first official competition in the GISST league. One Varsity boy, Rei E. proudly represented ISF. The Varsity Girls came in 3rd (2 pts), the U14 Girls in 2nd place (3pts) and the U14 Boys in 1st place (4 pts).
Furthermore, ISF's inter-school boys team Grade 5 achieved 1st place!
In addition to the fabulous 3rd and 4th places, there was one individual winner: Veit S. from Grade 4.
The chaperones and coaches were very happy to see a wonderful team spirit where the older students took care of the younger ones, and the younger runners were cheering the older students very enthusiastically.
The event and the housing was wonderfully organised, and all students became friends with many international families in Berlin.
Thank you to everyone for their commitment. Mrs. Groh is looking forward to five more GISST tournaments in Term I: Varisity Boys and Girls Volleyball, U14 Boys and Girls Soccer, and Varsity Soccer.
Team Building Workshop with 73 Grade 7 Students
Lots of fun and learning took place last Saturday, 18 September, as 73 grade 7 students came to ISF for a Team Building Workshop presented by Mr. Scholz-Beitz, Mr. May and Mr. Tobias. The purpose of team building training is to teach students how to cooperate and work together effectively. Team building also promotes camaraderie, cooperation, collaboration, problem solving, and critical thinking. All students who attended will receive a certificate of completion and the maximum number of SLO® points for such an event.
Open Door Meeting for Grade 7-9 Parents
All grades 7-9 parents are invited to attend the Open Door Meeting on Wednesday, October 13, at 19:00 in the theatre. Mr Tobias will address a few general topics of his choice, in addition to general topics that have been submitted by parents in advance. Parents should submit their choice of topics via e-mail to him by Wednesday, October 6. Concerns or questions regarding individual students or teachers are not appropriate for this meeting. Those issues should be brought to Mr. Tobias ’ attention directly.
ISF Boys Varsity Team Clobbers Teachers
On Monday, September 20, the ISF Boys Varsity Soccer Team fought against the teachers to win 10-4. A big congratulations goes to the students and the teachers. We are looking forward to a rematch in the summer after some much-needed training.

ISF Library Excited about Upcoming Author Visit
The Library is very proud to announce that Australia's awarded and best-loved children's author Morris Gleitzman is coming to our school for a reading on October 8. All sixth grade students will meet him and hear a few passages of his book "Once (German title: "Einmal") which is nominated for the Deutschen Jugendbuchpreis 2010.
Inspiring by Example at ISF's Annual Run-A-Thon
After school on Wednesday, 15th September, the SLO® in conjunction with the ISF Sportverein, held a wonderful afternoon of fun activities, including our annual Run-a-thon. The run-a-thon was held to raise money for our new Mascot 'The Bulldog' who will be used to create further school spirit and awareness within the school.
The run-a-thon attracted students, parents and teachers of all ages. Alongside this, the SLO® sold ice cream, generously donated by the Klügling family, gave students the chance to soak a teacher with wet sponges, and provided a musical background from several school rock bands.
A special mention goes to Charlotte J. in 7B who beat last year's girls' record running 28 laps, a total of 10.6km in an hour and a half, and Moritz V. in 5B who beat last year's boys' record running an amazing 48 laps, a total of 18.3km in an hour and a half. What an amazing effort! Now, THAT is inspiring by example!

"Another excellent vintage," says Mr. Slesser
ISF School Director Angus Slesser was very pleased to be able to tell parents that its external examination results in IGCSE, AP and the IB diploma were excellent
again this year.
In IGCSE examinations offered by the University of Cambridge
(CIE), ISF G10 pupils recorded a truly excellent 95% A-C pass rate.
In Advanced Placement (AP) examinations offered by the College Board in the USA our pupils recorded a 91% grades 3-5 pass
rate. In both the IGCSE and the AP, ISF pupils scored substantially above world average scores.
"This year we had our second crop of IB Diploma candidates," said Slesser, "and I am delighted to say that this group of pupils maintained and
surpassed last year’s excellent scores." Please see article below.
These academic results are a great testament to the excellence of SABIS® educational system that enables all of our pupils to
realise their potential. Of course, thanks and congratulation must go too to our team of dedicated teachers for their hard
work and inspiration and to our pupils who worked so hard and well, and have been thus rewarded.
Grade 10 and 11 Have Fun at Teambuilding Training
ISF students in Grade 10 and 11 participated in teambuilding training on August 30 and 31 at the Kelkheim Sportpark in Kelkheim, Germany. The training, which was led by external instructors, had the students involved in activities such as archery and a high rope garden, among others. The purpose of annual training is to increase cooperation and collaboration among the students, fine tune students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills, and teach students how to work together effectively as a team. In addition, the training sessions promote camaraderie and increase integration among all students.
The event was a huge success and a great experience for the participants.
ISF Scores Well on IB for Second Year in a Row
ISF, a non-selective school with a non-selective IB Diploma Programme, is celebrating excellent International Baccalaureate Diploma scores for the second year in a row. ISF started offering the IBDP in the fall of 2007.

-
90% of ISF students who were awarded the IB Diploma were awarded the more challenging bilingual diploma
Congratulations to the students, teaching staff and administration on a job well done!
In Case of Inclement Weather: Emergency Closure of School
Please note the following procedures for alerting parents. We have decided that future closure alerts will be sent as SMS messages (text messages) from ISF direct to parents’ mobile telephone. We hope to be able to send any such message by 06:00h on the day of the closure. The message will be sent to the mobile telephone numbers you have given us for each parent. Please remember to let the school know whenever you change your mobile telephone number and/or email address.
In addition, if the school is closed, we will put a message on the school website as soon as we possibly can on the day of the closure. We will not ask radio stations to transmit any alert messages because in the past there has been a very great deal of confusion among our parent body caused by unclear radio messages regarding the closure of other international schools. We will ONLY use this SMS Alert to alert parents of an emergency school closure. It will not be used for any other purpose by ISF.

ISF Dress Code clothing available through Lands' End!
The beginning of the 2010-11 academic year saw the introduction of one mandatory item of school dress code for all of Grades 1-6, to be worn during the normal school day. This is the ISF polo shirt. This shirt is offered in a choice of three colours and is available with the logo, for a much reduced price of €20 per shirt. Of course, pupils in other grades other than G1-6 may choose to wear our new ISF shirt and we expect that many will do so. In 2011-12 the school shirt will be introduced as a mandatory item into G7 and then into further grades, one per year, in each of the coming years.
Orders can be made by use of the Order Form using the simplified sizing chart which can be emailed or posted to Lands' End (see form for details). Alternatively, parents may wish to order directly via the Lands' End website on the page dedicated to ISF. This instructional page may be accessed in German or in English by using the language option on the top right-hand corner of the page; however, the online ordering process is in German.
We will also accept shirts provided by other suppliers as long as they are in the same colours and style as the Lands' End shirt and do not bear any manufacturers' logos.
Order Form For a Great Fit
School Mandatory Dress Code:
- The polo shirt is mandatory for all students 1-6 for everyday wear.
- The shirt may be purchased in navy blue, burgundy or white.
- Students are strongly encouraged to purchase any other desired items from the suggested range for the normal school day. These items can be purchased with or without logos.
Mandatory Sports Dress code:
- This must be purchased for all students for PE lessons.
- Consists of a polo shirt, with the ISF logo, and shorts/pants from the offered range.
- Students may also wear their ISF Sportverein uniform to PE, as an alternative.
- Students may select other items from the range if they wish, but this is not mandatory.
